Anywhere.FM is an online music player (and more) that allows you to upload your entire iTunes, WinAmp and Windows Media libraries – essentially letting you take your music anywhere you have web access. The site sports a keen player and other cool functions like buddy radio and recommendations and the interface is pretty slick. This is some snazzy technology that I would usually be touting as a great new treat but alas, there is something about this site that I just don’t like.
The whole premise of this site is to store copies of all your music…of all the music of all it’s users. The music industry has been raging against file sharing to the point where you can’t even copy songs (songs you’ve legally paid for) between different media players you legally own. Yet here is a website that will take copies of all those songs and keep them on their servers. We’re not supposed to rip a song from a CD and put it on our iPod, but these guys can collect copies of every song of all it’s users?? How does that make sense? If I asked you to send me copies of all your music you better believe some big corporate lawyer would be bringing the hammer down on me! Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t get it.
